Ways to Make a GoldenEye Cocktail
A GoldenEye is a Jamaican cocktail recipe made with rum, pineapple juice, and lime juice. To prepare this drink, all ingredients should be shaken with ice then poured into a lowball glass and garnished with a pineapple wedge or a lime wheel.
There are not many variations going on in the recipe, save the brands of rum and garnish, with only a few outliers. For example, another GoldenEye recipe calls for 1 oz of Goldschlager Shapps on 1oz of Baileys and garnished with a peanut.
History of the GoldenEye Cocktail
When Ian Fleming would hang out with Noel Coward and Winston Churchill to have drinks and the concept of the Vesper Martini (shaken, not stirred) was created! The name GoldenEye is obviously related to the James Bond story GoldenEye and Fleming’s estate in Oracabessa, Jamaica named GoldenEye.
The City of Oracabessa, Jamaica
Oracabessa is a small town in St Mary, Jamaica 10 miles east of Ocho Rios. Its population was 4,108 in 2009. Lit in the afternoons by an apricot light that may have inspired its Spanish name, Oracabeza, or “Golden Head”, Oracabessa’s commercial district consists of a covered produce market and a few shops and bars.
Oracabessa, with its stunning natural beauty and the friendly local population, is one of Jamaica’s best-kept secrets. In spite of starring in major motion pictures, being written about in songs, and being the inspiration for some of the world’s greatest artists, very few people know about this jewel of the North Coast. Far from the maddening crowds and large all-inclusive hotel chains, Oracabessa is an oasis in an oasis. With the most luxurious hotel on the island (Golden Eye), and the most spectacular villa (Golden Clouds), a vacation in Oracabessa is a truly memorable experience.
The name “GoldenEye” pays homage to James Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming. While working for British Naval Intelligence as a lieutenant commander, Fleming liaised with the Naval Intelligence Division to monitor developments in Spain after the Spanish Civil War, in an operation codenamed Operation Goldeneye. Fleming used the name for his estate in Oracabessa, Jamaica.
