This Bourbon Chicken recipe brings the taste of Bourbon Street right to your kitchen. Tender chicken is simmered in a delectable bourbon-infused sauce that's rich, sweet, and slightly tangy. It's easy to make and will have you feeling like you're dining in the heart of New Orleans!
Heat the oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
Add the chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned. Remove the chicken and set aside.
In the same skillet, add the garlic, ginger, and crushed red pepper flakes. Cook for a few seconds until fragrant.
Add apple juice, brown sugar, ketchup, cider vinegar, water, soy sauce, and bourbon. Stir well to combine and bring the mixture to a boil.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and return the chicken to the skillet.
Cover the skillet and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Uncover the skillet and simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced and thickened.
Serve the Bourbon Chicken over steamed rice, garnished with green onions or sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
This dish gets its name from Bourbon Street in New Orleans, not from bourbon whiskey.
The bourbon whiskey is optional in this recipe and can be omitted for a traditional Bourbon Chicken.
If you like your sauce thicker, you can add a cornstarch slurry (1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water) towards the end of the cooking process.
